Letter to S.M.KrishnaDear S.M. Krishna,

This is Sudha, a citizen of this country and one of your admirers living not in Karnataka but in the neighbouring State of Tamilnadu.

It was gracious on your part to concede defeat well before the entire results were out. It also showed your civility when you had congratulated the BJP on its victory.

Sir, the BJP is short of majority by a few MLAs. Of course, the party will try to garner support from independents or even a section of MLAs of the JD (S).

The purpose of my writing to you is, sir, that the Congress party should contemplate on extending issue-based support to the Government that is likely to be formed by the BJP. You do not have to support ideological agenda of the BJP but on issues that are of important to the people of Karnataka, the party can support the Govt. Such an approach will not only enhance the image of your party in Karnataka but also in other parts of the country.

Sir, the scenario of the party in power not having a simple majority is nothing new to our country. Even in Tamil Nadu, the ruling DMK does not have a majority of its own but it is running the government on the support provided by its allies. In the case of Karnataka, you do not have to be an ally of the BJP but, in the interests of Karnataka and also for the reason that the people should not be subjected to another general elections to the Assembly now, your party can consider supporting the government.

Sir, you may be aware that in the advanced democracies, the principal political rivals have come together to form governments. A recent case is the coalition government headed by Merkel in Germany . There the government is composed of representatives of the two major parties – CDU/CSU and the Socialists.

In the mid-1980s, Israel had one such government. In the former West Germany , from 1964-1967, the two major parties were in power together. There are instances in England too. Having studied all the examples, I do not think that the intensity of political differences among the parties in these countries was or is in any way less among our parties.

So, please give a thought to my proposal and discuss it with your colleagues.

Yours sincerely

Sudha, Chennai
