I am a Mangalorean too. I love Kannada as much as i love Tulu. I studied in Kannada medium too till 7th Standard. Today i am doing well in life. Learning KANNADA in school or talking in KANNADA in my family did not harm me in anyway ! Rather i admire the values taught by PUNYA KOTI.
Isnt it ridiculous that English schools authorities announcing since 99% do not speak Kannada they need English education. They are ready to learn an Alien language ENGLISH but not their State language Kannada ! Karnataka is the only state where State language is ignored so pathetically. GO to the neighbouring states .The State language is Compulsory language in schools in those States.
Dear Chief Minister ..please do not care for all these crap and implement your idea of making Kannada compulsory in schools.May be school authorities are worried about the School donations ! You will be remembered by us Kannadigas(Who ever has or had the roots in this holy land of Karnataka irrespective of language) as the one Chief Minister who contributed for the welfare of Kannada.
Let everyone learn "ENGLISH" too to as an International language. At the same time let not anybody ignore "KANNADA".
English is going strong. Everyone will learn it automatically. But time has come to save KANNADA. Lets do something for KANNADA. JAI KARNATAKA
I read the article about the state of kannada where in, the statement of Mr.NRM of Infosys is also mentioned. Mr.NRM is of the opinion that English is the only language that every one should learn and probably wants even un-born children to learn English before they are born, like we have heard about Abhimanyu learning about Chkravyuha before he was born!!!
While English has its rightful place in various environments and businesses, the language itself can not be knowledge. A language is only a vehicle to acquire knowledge. If basics of Science and Maths are good, children can perform well in IT field and language there becomes secondary. All of studied in Kannada medium in school but still could do well in IT field.
The problem which we face today, is that we are not prepared to use kannada in our daily life. When I was a boy, we used to find that many people used to write Bank challans, Cheques etc, in Kannada. Later English and Hindi only started appearing in challans etc. discouraging people to use Kannada.
Banks are very important part of every ones life. I have observed that many people who can write in kannada ask others to fill their forms in English, thinking that they can not use Kannada in these places. It is a tragedy to see this happening in Bangalore.
For the last few years, I have started writing my Bank Challans in Kannada most of the times I visit a Bank. Also the Railway reservation form can be filled in Kannada. There could be many such places where kannada can be used. If all of us consciously start using Kannada in our daily life, Kannada will survive and grow. Otherwise, in few decades, it will get reduced to the same state as Sanskrit. Sorry for emailing in English, as I do not have the Kannada software with me right now.
