Sir,

I wrote to Deccan Herald to publish the following in its "Forum". DH preferred to publish the views of those who are opposing the move to rename Bangalore as Bangaluru.

I would like share my views in this forum. (I was a reader of The Hindu for 25 years. About a year back I moved over to Deccan Herald thinking that it publishes more news pertaining to Kannada and its people. I feel that I took a wrong decision. The DH is bringing out Metro. The chefs are 95% Keralites. How can we expect them to serve Mudde and Soppina saru. Certainly I am not against Keralities)

Linguistic states were formed to fulfill the hopes and aspirations of different language people. When the names of Bombay, Madras, Calcutta were changed, nobody raised their fingers and talked about brand name and economics involved in changing the names. When. Kannadigas want to call their capital city as Bangaluru, the freshers (mostly technies) and English- loving five star journalists oppose the move and call Kannadigas are parochial.

The techies (with some exceptions) know only one language, the language of Money. Some of them even want to change the name of Hosur Road to "Bill Gates Corridor". Dada Saheb Phalke awardee Adoor Gopalakrishna says " Language is not just a medium for conveying ideas alone. It is the power of our life and culture".

Suresh Menon, writes in Deccan Herald "I came to Bangalore 40 years ago…The city is his as much as it is mine and U.R.Ananthmurthy’s. ..We could have had a referendum". He might have come to Bangalore about 40 years back.

I think his heart is still in his native state. At the other end of spectrum we see the people like Chiranjiv Singh, former Additional Chief Secretary of Karnataka. Kanndigas adore them and consider them as Nammavaru. When the Kasaragodu merged with Kerala, did anybody conduct referendum?

One request to non-kannadigas. Please do not push Kannadigas to the corner and create Bal Thakreys and see the ugly scenes like tarring the face of Belgaum Mayor.
