I recently read the article by V Lakshmikanth and have read many such articles in the past. What I noticed is most of the writers of such articles write so in context of Bangalore. We have to remember that kannada is not a language only in Bangalore but all over Karnataka. How is the situation of kannada and kannada movies outside Bangalore.
For example I lived in Banglaore for 15 years and in a town about 200 Kms from Bangalore for 6 years. For many days after I moved into this small town I couldnt belive that such a town existed outside Bangalore. Even though the town had a huge nonkannada population(just like in Bangalore), local people tried to converse with these people in kannada(no hindi, tamil, telugu and defenetly no english). I saw that many of the nonkannada people I knew picked up a little kannada while living in that town. As far as the movies are concerned there was only one theater where hindi movies were shown and one other theater where telugu/tamil or any other language movies were shown. All other (about 56 more) showed only kannada movies which were popular in the town. Even on television kannada channels were the major competitors. No one watched the other language channels much.
After seeing all this, I understood the easy way to be a kannadiga and then on became very proud of being a kannadiga and have been since trying to propagate my language and culture where ever I have been.
In my opinion the reason for kannada audience rejecting the crappy movies these days is because, karnataka and especially Bangalore people (kannadigas) are highly educated and need good quality entertainment. Other language movies are a success in Bangalore because a big chunk of rural population from other states have moved in to Bangalore in search of better life, and they give a lot of importance to these movies. It doesnt bother them that these movies are good or bad quality. I can only sympathies with this population for the hardship in their lives and the happiness they find in the dream world of cinema.
Its high time people with non filmy background get into the entertainment business. Its high time good movies are made casting good actors without much interference from the so called first family of kannada cinema. There is a reason some good mega serials have become very popular on TV. Its high time people stop making movies just for sake of making movies and start taking entertainment seriously. And please extramarital affairs, girls dressed (or undressed) in skimpy clothes, lewd comments about women, showing men as sex maniacs is neither our culture nor entertainment. If any one is entrusted in movies with a lot of sex and violence, there is already a huge entertainment industry in not so far away country dishing out dozens of movies every year to cater to this type of audience.
We have to get this matter into proper perspective and act on it.
