ನಮ್ಮವರಿಗಿಂತ ಬಾಲಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯಂ ಎಷ್ಟೋ ಮೇಲು!

ಮಾನ್ಯರೆ,

ಪೂರ್ಣಿಮಾರವರ ಲೇಖನ ಮತ್ತು ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಬರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯೆ ಓದಿ ಬಹಳ ಬೇಸರ ಎನಿಸಿತು. ಇತ್ತೀಚೆಗೆ ಪ್ರತಿಯಾಂದಕ್ಕೂ ಆಕ್ಷೇಪಿಸುವುದು ಒಂದು ರೀತಿಯ ಫ್ಯಾಷನ್‌ ಆಗಿಬಿಟ್ಟಿದೆ.

ಎಸ್‌ ಪಿ ಬಾಲುರವರಂತಹ ಕಲಾವಿದರು ಭಾಷೆ, ಗಡಿಗಳನ್ನು ಮೀರಿ ಬೆಳೆದವರು. ಬಾಲು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸನ್ಮಾನ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದು ಸೂಕ್ತವಾಗಿಯೇ ಇದೆ. ಇದರಲ್ಲಿ ಯಾವುದೇ ರೀತಿಯ ಸಂಶಯ ಸಲ್ಲದು. ಹಾಗೆ ನೋಡಿದರೆ ಬಾಲು ಅವರಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಪುರಸ್ಕಾರ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿರೋದು ತುಂಬಾ ಕಡಿಮೆ ಅಂತಾನೆ ಅನ್ನಬಹುದು (ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ರಾಜ್ಯ ಪುರಸ್ಕಾರ ಒಂದು ಹೊರತುಪಡಿಸಿ ಬೇರೆ ಯಾವ ಪ್ರಮುಖ ಪುರಸ್ಕಾರ ಕೂಡ ಅವರಿಗೆ ದೊರಕಿರುವ ನೆನಪಾಗುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ).

ಬಾಲು ಕಡೆಯ ಪಕ್ಷ ಹರಕು ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತಾಡೋಕಾದ್ರೂ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ್ನಪಡುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಆದರೆ ನಮ್ಮ ಕೆಲವು ಫೇಮಸ್‌ ಕನ್ನಡ ತಾರೆಯರ ಸಂದರ್ಶನಗಳನ್ನು ಒಮ್ಮೆ ಈ ಟೀವಿ, ಉದಯ ಟೀವಿ ಅಥವಾ ಎಫ್‌ಎಂ ರೇಡಿಯಾಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಕೇಳಿ ನೋಡಿ. ಎಲ್ಲ ಥೇಮ್ಸ್‌ ನದಿಯ ನೀರು ಕುಡಿದು ಬೆಳೆದವರೇನೋ ಅನ್ನಬೇಕು. ಹಾಗೆ ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತು ಉದುರಿಸುತ್ತಾರೆ. ಅಲ್ಲದೆ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಉದ್ಧಾರ ಕನ್ನಡಿಗರಿಂದ ಮಾತ್ರ ಆಗಿದೆ ಅನ್ನೋ ಧೋರಣೆ ಸಲ್ಲದು.

ಕನ್ನಡ ಕಲಾವಿದರ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡದಲ್ಲಿ ಗೌರವ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಇದೆ. ಅದಕ್ಕೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ ನಮ್ಮೆಲ್ಲರ ನೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಡಾ.ರಾಜ್‌. ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಉದಾಹರಣೆ ಸೀ. ಅಶ್ವಥ್‌ರ ಕನ್ನಡವೇ ಸತ್ಯ ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮ.

ಅಕ್ಕ, ಕಾವೇರಿ ಮುಂತಾದ ಸಹೃದಯಿ ಬಳಗಗಳಿಗೆ ನನ್ನ ಒಂದೇ ಒಂದು ಕಳಕಳಿಯ ಕೋರಿಕೆ ಏನೆಂದರೆ, ಎಸ್‌. ಜಾನಕಿ, ಪಿ ಬಿ ಶ್ರೀನಿವಾಸ್‌, ಪಿ ಸುಶೀಲ ಇನ್ನಿತರ ‘ಕನ್ನಡೇತರ’ರಿಗೆ ಸನ್ಮಾನ ಯಾವಾಗ?’

ಎಸ್‌.ಪಿ. ಬಾಲಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯಂ ಕುರಿತಾದ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಮಾತುಗಳು ಅಕ್ಷರಶ: ಸತ್ಯ. ಎಸ್‌.ಪಿ. ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸರಳ ಕನ್ನಡವನ್ನೂ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಮಾತನಾಡಲು ಬರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.

ನಾನು ರವಿವಾರಗಳ ಎದೆ ತುಂಬಿ ಹಾಡುವೆನು ಕಾರ್ಯಕ್ರಮವನ್ನು ತಪ್ಪಿಸದೆ ನೋಡುವ ಪ್ರಜೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಓರ್ವಳು. ಎಸ್‌.ಪಿ. ಬಾಲಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯಂ ಮಾತನಾಡುವ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಶೈಲಿಯನ್ನು ನೋಡಿದಾಗ,ಅವರ ಧ್ವನಿ/ಹಾಡುಗಳು ಎಷ್ಟೇ ಮಧುರವಾಗಿದ್ದರು ಅವರ ಕುರಿತು ಒಂದು ತರಹದ ಕಹಿಯಾದ ಭಾವನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹುಟ್ಟಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

ಪೂರ್ಣಿಮಾ ಪತ್ರಕ್ಕೆ ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯಿಸಿರುವ ಕೇಶವಸುತ ಅವರೆ, ಇತರ ಭಾಷೆಗಳೊಂದಿಗೆ ಕನ್ನಡದ ಹಾಡುಗಳು ಎಸ್‌.ಪಿ.ಬಾಲಸುಬ್ರಹ್ಮಣ್ಯಂ ಅವರಿಗೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಹೆಸರು, ಹಣ ಗಳಿಸಲು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡಿವೆ. ಅನ್ನ ಕೊಟ್ಟ ತಾಯಿ ಅನ್ನುವ ಭಾವನೆಯಿಂದಾದರು ಅವರು ಕನ್ನಡವನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾಗಿ ಕಲಿತು ಗೌರವಿಸಬಹುದಿತ್ತು.

ಅನ್ನ ನೀಡುವ ಭೂಮಿ, ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿ, ಭಾಷೆಗಳನ್ನು ಕಲಿಯುವುದು/ಗೌರವಿಸುವುದು ನಿಮ್ಮರ್ಥದಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಲಿಹಾಕುವುದಾ? ತಪ್ಪು ನಮ್ಮದೆ, ನಾವು ಕನ್ನಡದ ಪ್ರತಿಭೆಗಳನ್ನು ಮುಂದೆತರದೆ ಇಂತಹ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಮಣೆ ಹಾಕುತ್ತೆವಲ್ಲಾ.

Dear friends,

I have mixed feeling about SPB. There is no doubt that he is one of the greatest singers of our era. To be fair to SPB, I can confidently say that other than PBS and Dr.Raj he is the only male singer among old timers to have sung Kannada songs in its purest/truest form. All others, including some great ones, have at one point of time or other, compromised on their diction. To this extent, SPB is unparalled.

Now to the downside-it is indeed a shame he cannot speak proper Kannada even after almost 40-years of singing. But then, who is to be blamed? Kannada film industry, during its qualitatively great years, grew-up in Madras and had limited chance to trumpet about its language.

Even to this day, many of the technicians working in our film industry have a different mother tongue. Its not their mistake but the historical blunder of restricting Kannada films to what is known as old Mysore area. This area is full of Telugu/Tamil/Malayalam-speaking people, most of whom have accepted Kannada as their language and contributed in a big way to its rich culture. So, it is not theif fault if they speak in other languages in recording studios to make the it easy for the singers. We have also heard time and again how SPB does not just sing the song but wants to understand the lyrics completely before rendering them. Which means he does respect the language and there need not be any doubt about it. I cant go into details of all this-let me write in detail next time.

Regarding the topic of singers in Kannada films, for obvious reasons, SPB, S.Janaki, P.Susheela etc. became popular in Kannada. Going by the popular saying "Gunakke Matsaravilla" we have to accept the fact that the voices of these great singers was much better than our own talent which was available during 1960/70s. Period.

Fast forwarding to present situation, all our Kannada T.V. channels are owned by companies from other states. So, if SPB talks about Telugu, Tamil or Hindi in his programmes, we have to understand that he is also under the scanner from these T.V. stations to do it. I have no doubt about it. About 10-years back or so, when we were already cribbing that Kannada films were of poor quality, he said in an interview to TARANGA magazine that he was getting his best songs only in Kannada as compared to other languages!

Let us become entrepreneurs and have a Kannadiga starting a T.V. station or own some powerful media at least now so that our next generations dont have to indulge in such emotional talk which has no meaning in the practical world. Kannadigas have it in their blood to learn, accept and appreciate all languages; let it continue, but not at the cost of our own language.

I entirely agree with the writer. Like Master Hirannaiah time and again sadly says, We Kannadigas are Nirabhimaanigalu.

When we have a host of extremly talented Kannada singers who have dedicated everything in their life to Kannada, why do we have to go after non-kannada singers, that too for Viswha Kannada Sammelana.

I have friends who have first hand experience about how much SPB cares for money and only money. And we are expecting love from him for Kannada language, which is alien to him.

This is enough reason for others to make fun of our love for Kannada language.

Hi Poornima,

I appreciate your concerns about Karnataka, Kannada and Kannadigas.
What are you angry at? Are you angry at "SP is a good singer"? Are you angry at "SP does not speak Kannada, thou he makes good enough money by singing Kannada songs"?

Or, is it a frustration that you are not able to find a good singer (thou there are many) from Karnataka? You are not hitting on the head of the nail.

Note that SPB is a singer, a peformer, above all a person like me and you who is doing no non-sense in earning his money. (at least what I know). He is not Telgi, not Harshad, any match fixing cricketer neither. He is singing, people are appreciating, producer gets money and hence SPB gets money.

Talent is not bound to any region, any language. It is natures gift added with persons passion. If you really think about Karnataka, Kannada and Kannadigas there are other things to think about.

Answer me following questions.

1. How many Kannadigas of Bangalore (mind it of Bangalore) speak Kannada with other Kannada speaking fellows?
2. How many "Kannadigas of Bangalore" aware of Karnataka?
3. How many "Kannadigas of Bangalore" know there are many more districts in North Karnataka than Hubli-Dharwad?

I really agree with your views. Chance would have been given to many other Our Singers instead of calling S P B. That would have added real colours to AKKA.

I am enjoying all the articles about the conference. What bothers me most is Gurukiran coming on the Kannada Stage and making a big show. Back home, he makes all Hindi Singers record all the songs. Marjority of the songs are recorded by Udit Narayan, Kunal Ganjawala, SP etc., Where as there are so many very good Kannada singers who are waiting for these directors and producers. Kannada singers are never given chances may be one or two songs here and there. This is what I call ultimate hypocracy!!!!
