Dear Editor:

For the past couple of months I have been following all this hoopla about AKKA. I have been living in the US (in Los Angeles) since 1970. When I came here, there were very few Kannada families.. Of these, I got very close to Aithals and I have maintained the same close relationship todate. I still remember we getting together at one of the homes of these Kannada families (of course more often than not, it would be at Aithals!!). We did not have any specific agenda and we enjoyed getting together, being able to converse in Kannada, share things with each other and having a good time. As the number of Kannada speaking population started growing, we thought of formalizing such get togethers by proposing to form an Association. Of course, the rest is history. Kannada Koota of Southern California was formed (to cater to the Kannadigas of this region) is one of the oldest ones in the US. There are a lot of cultural and social activities under the auspices of this association. As similar associations started springing across the US, there seemed like there was a need for a better coordination of these associations. The result of this effort was the Kannada conference held in Phoenix, Arizona, during 1998. It was an extremely enjoyable function, despite the fact that there were some grumblings among the members about the type of food served etc.,

Then in September 2000, a similar conference was held in Houston, Texas. This probably was one of the best organized events, and was even more enjoyable and memorable than the one in Phoenix. I still carry fond memories of that conference. During that conference it was announced that the next conference would be held in New York area in 2002. However, due to the events of 9/11, the venue was changed.

The last conference was held at Detroit, Michigan in September 2002. I did not attend this conference due to short notification I received about this conference. In any case, I gathered (from those who did attend the conference) that the conference was nowhere as organized as the one held in Houston.

It is extremely unfortunate that now there is a faction of AKKA (known as AKKA-B) has been formed. From the excerpts of the news conference that the president of AKKA-B, held at Bangalore, I notice that they want to establish another unit called AMMA..

To me this shows the total immaturity. After all the number of Kannadigas in the US (relatively speaking) is very few compared to other groups (such as Gujarathis). Is the group so large that we cannot handle the needs of all Kannadigas under one Association? It sound so ridiculous even to think of forming these sub groups within a small group such as AKKA.

I know there are a lot of Kannda families who have not joined any association, simply because of this idiotic politics. We have enough to worry about in this foreign land. If this idiotic behavior continues, I can assure you a lot more Kannadigas would prefer to disassociate themselves from the Kannada Associations, whether it be Kannada Koota(s) or AKKA.

Thanks for listening.

Hi,
I had read the article about stay of the author (Shivananda Naganur) in Melbourne. As I had visited other palces too, I could understand when he described" kaddi na gudda maadi thoristhaarey", MCG etc.. But i did realise there are really interesting places around melbourne like Ballarat, 12 apostles etc.. So, went back to article and read through. Though there is a picture of author with the fantastic apostles backdrop, there is no mention about them. I think the author should revisit thatskannada and write about the city and good things around too while saying "kaddi na gudda maadi thoristhaare" and "abroad cities are neat, good and well maintained". There is nothing wrong in whatever he has written, but it would be even better if he did write about some worth visiting places around melbourne.
Regards,

Girish.

Hi,

Here is a cut-and-paste extract from something I wrote some time back and set aside for expansion/correction. There is also a snippet in "My fair lady"(not in Pygmalion) on the same idea.- Krishnapriyan

"On some of our trips to Mavinakere, the abode of our family deity, Ranganatha, we used to travel by the night mail train from Bangalore to Poona. We never reserved seats, perhaps because of a lack of planning ahead, but one can also put it down to trust in Ranganatha, who would provide seats for us on the train, if he really did want us to go and see him. If we were lucky, we would get into one of the Mysore compartments, which got detached in Arsikere, and got attached to the Ariskere-Mysore shuttle, and we could doze off and wake up in the morning headed towards Mavinakere via Hassan. If not, we would have to force ourselves to stay awake, until we got to Arsikere and move on to the shuttle, in order to avoid speeding towards Poona, until a ticket inspector caught onto us. It is on one of these trips that we heard the following story.

There was a station master at Hassan, who was supposed to loudly announce Hasna, Hasna whenever the train from Arsikere to Mysore arrived in Hassan, since all the people dozing off to the rhythmic noise of the train and destined for Hassan had to be woken up to get off there. The stationmaster probably did not have the opportunity to polish up his pronunciation of the glottal H sound, under the watchful eyes and wrathful canes of his language teachers in his younger days. He must have spent his boyhood in pleasanter pursuits, and must not have realized the great impact this sort of lack of attention to pronunciation would have on his lifestyle when he grew up to be a stationmaster.

The man used to yell Asna, Asna instead, dropping his aitches all over the place. This came to the attention of one of his purist superior officers in the railways. The officer did not and perhaps could not fire him for this lapse of correct pronunciation. What could he do to fix the situation? The two-in-one solution he found would have warmed the cockles of the hearts of the inventors of the reflecting flea and tick collar and the can opener/knife sharpener combo. He thought of the brilliant idea of transferring the man from Hassan to Arsikere, accomplishing two things at once. In the first place, the transfer would be a rap on the knuckles for the station master. Hassan, a district head quarters, had all the modern amenities that the a district headquarters would have, whereas Arsikere was a much smaller town, a much less desirable place to be. Probably not as bad as Kollegala, but definitely a big step down from Hassan. Secondly, since Arsikere did not have aitches to be dropped, the travellers were spared the dreadful fate of being woken up by mispronounced words grating on their ears.

Sadly, the idea did not work well. The newly transferred stationmaster would yell Harsikere, Harsikere on the arrival of the mail at Arsikere, introducing a h sound where it was not needed."

Hi thatskannada team,

Your site is coming out excellent these days-both in content and presentation. I read Janakis article about authors and literature. It was an eyeopener article for all the senior writers as well as budding writers.

Interviews by Chetan and Mukund are good. I dont know why these two are behind actors and actresses. Let them also project other unsung heroes dedicated to other fields.

Keep up the good work.

Dear Editor

I thoroughly enjoyed the poem A-Ha and also the response by MySreeNa. This is the standard that is needed to be seen in Kannada publications! Thanks so much for sharing your creations with the rasikas. The recognition of a pronunciation problem, common but not trivial, and composing a comical poem about shows Ramapriyas creative skills. The cleverness of MySreeNa is seen in catching the appropriateness of the name "Ramapriya" and making a story based on that! I cant stop craving for more of these. Please continue!

To the Editor Mr. Shamasundar:
Namaskara!
Let me first congratulate you on the wonderful job you are doing. This is a clarification on the "veerashaiva meeting" mentioned by Dr. Ramachandra Sharma in his speech and his letter.
It was the tenth annual convention of Veerashaiva Samaja of North America held in Chicago in 1987. About 400 people from all over USA and Canada attended the convention to participate in the religious, cultural and social activities.
Professor A. K. Ramanujam was the chief guest speaker. His talk on vachanas was very well received by the captivated audience. Mr. Ramanujam knew what the theme of the convention was when he graciously accepted the invitation to address the gathering.
There was vachana recitation, group prayer, kannada songs, dances, skit and a kannada drama presented by children and adults. A few people (it was 16 years ago, very few I would
think) might have attended the convention with matrimonial ideas for their kids. What difference did that really make? It is hard to imagine that Mr. Ramanujam felt "khedha" or even dwelled over the reason why people attended the socio-religious conference!

Bhavani Prasad

Dear Sir,
This is one example of how half baked writers inject immature ideas into the minds of people.
It is very difficult to explain why rains fail or shower unseasonally. Even analysis of satellite data by super computers fail to precisely indicate why monsoons fail or delay. How ever planting trees is a good idea. But only trees or forest alone can not assure monsoons. On the other hand Parjanya japa is not a totally bad idea. These are some ways a troubled people find out to insist on Super natural powers. It is the prerogetive of people to prey for Gods when everything fails. There are always powers of nature that are not under human control.
These half baked articles, in no way, enhance the value of your web portal.

Dear Dattathri

Your essays on the lives and works of the great personalities like Shivaram Karanth and William Stafford on either side of the ocean are unique and very useful apart from being of good quality in themself. Contrasting, comparing and bringing out the common elements of the great authors from the seemingly diverse cultures of east and west has great value to both the societies; especially to those who are shelled in theirs and have difficulty in looking into the other. I hope you find time to translate your essays to English as well.

Dear sir,
Reg: tippu this was written long back even before the traslation tippu nijaswrupa" :
As far as old mysore is concerned tippu was great and what not. this is due to poornaihs advice. tipu forced the women folk of maharajas family to clean the stables and used to give them " ragi mudde. he burnt the library of the maharaja to cook horse gram!!! He forced devan poornaihs daughter to marry one his commandants . she was also imprisoned with the members of the tipus family at vellore. her only request was that she should have a mausoleum built in the shape of a temple. this was fulfilled by her son. it is there as one among so many graves of tipus family at vellore. he forced and converted lots of hindus at kodagu and also in north malabar. he forced Christians of mangalore to walk from mangalore to srirangapatnam as one of the Christians gave some information to British. ( this may or may not be true but tipu suspected it) nearly thousands died during the march. the group included women and children . they were not even offered water let alone food during the journey!! He destroyed guruvayoor temple and looted it . so also he destroyed so many temples outside mysore state of that period. some how our so called leaders forget all these things. it was a fact that he was a coward and to save his life he even pledged his children to English!!!
what a great tiger of mysore!!! Ha Ha Ha Ha. the lie is repeated and it becomes a fact. he did not dare do such dastardly acts at old mysore as he feared that he will have to face the wrath of the hindus who were in majority in his kingdom. for all these things unfortunately poornaih had also had a hand. what a shame!!

I read with pleasure your two-part articles about Sri S.K.Harihareshwara and his maatina mamTapa essay-collection. You have written nice things about nice person/his work in a nice way! I am sure many will agree with me. I was blessed by Sri SKH during our first meet at WKC-2002 Detroit, he gave me a complimentary copy of the book maatina mamTapa; I have read the book in full once but will read some essays again and again - at least a few portions. Your articles yesterday and today, I consider as "complementary" to my knowledge about Sri SKH and his works.

Thanks should also go to Sri S.K.Shamasundara of thatskannada.com - who helped/is helping spread Kannada worldwide!

To end my note, let me quote a quickwit used by Sri Vishweshwar Bhat - Chief editor of Vijaya Karnataka. In a recent article he wrote, Hari and Sham - both with initials S.K have proved beyond doubt that S.K stand for "shuddha kannaDiga" !

Sri Hari & Smt.Nagalakshmi yavarige:

namaskaaragaLu.

I am glad to read about your relentless untiring activities of/about/from/to KANNADA. Just now I read Shams kemDasampige in which he wrote about manwamtara T.N.Seetarams program at your Saraswatipuram residence. I also came to know that Dr.Guruprasad Kaginele was present there too.

Very nice to know all these. We all pray GOD to shower good health and "bhagavadanugraha" to You and then through You, to all of us! (all of us in US...:-)

Warm regards and best wishes,

Dear Sukumar,

A great poem indeed. I have a tendency to analyze literature, but to many of your works I simply surrender. Why dont you please write a poem on sharaNaagati ?

Dear Editor,
It is silly that actor Tennis Krishna fought with the cameraman who videoed the marriage. But it is equally, or even more silly for the media to raise a hue and cry. Any sensible person will ask you a question well, whats your problem? Who gave the media this freedom to peep into any ones life?
