ಅ ದಿಂದ ಜ್ಞ ದವರೆಗೆ ಅಗಲಜ್ಞಾನದ ಅಲ್ಪಜ್ಞ!

(ಆಳವಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಅಗಲವಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಕುರಿತಂತೆ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದ ವಿಚಿತ್ರಾನ್ನ ಸಂಚಿಕೆ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಮಂದಿಯನ್ನು ಚಿಂತನೆಗೆ ಹಚ್ಚಿದೆ. ಲೇಖನದಲ್ಲಿ ವ್ಯಕ್ತವಾಗಿದ್ದ ಅಂಶಗಳನ್ನು ಬಹುತೇಕವಾಗಿ ಅಂಗೀಕರಿಸಿ ಪತ್ರಗಳು ಬಂದಿವೆ. ಪ್ರತಿಕ್ರಿಯಿಸಿದ ಓದುಗರಿಗೆಲ್ಲ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು - ಶ್ರೀವತ್ಸ ಜೋಶಿ.)

‘ಆಳ ಜ್ಞಾನ... ಅಗಲ ಜ್ಞಾನ’ದ ಲೇಖನ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಹೌದು, ನಾನೂ ಕೂಡ ‘ಅ ದಿಂದ ಜ್ಞ ವರೆಗೂ ಗೊತ್ತಿರುವ ಅಗಲಜ್ಞಾನದ ಅಲ್ಪಜ್ಞ’ ಎಂದು ನನ್ನನ್ನು ಪರಿಗಣಿಸುತ್ತೇನೆ. ಚಿಂತನಾರ್ಹ ಲೇಖನವನ್ನು ಬರೆದದ್ದಕ್ಕೆ ಧನ್ಯವಾದಗಳು.

ಈ ರೀತಿಯ ಒಂದು ಆಲೋಚನೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ನನಗೆ ಮೊದಲು ನೆನಪಾಗುವುದು ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದು ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತಿಯ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆಳವಾದ ಆಲೋಚನೆ ಮತ್ತು ಜ್ಞಾನದ ಕೊರತೆ. ಬಹುಶಃ ಇದೇ ಕಾರಣಕ್ಕೋ ಏನೊ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ (ಅದರಲ್ಲೂ ನಗರಪ್ರದೇಶದ ಜನರಲ್ಲಿ) ನಮ್ಮ ಹಿರಿಯರು ಹೇಳುವ ಕೆಲವೊಂದು ಆಚರಣೆಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಅಸಡ್ಡೆ ಇರುವುದು. ಉದಾಹರಣೆಗೆ ತುಳಸಿ ಅಥವಾ ಅಶ್ವತ್ಥಕ್ಕೆ ಸುತ್ತು ಬರುವುದು, ಬೆಳಗ್ಗಿನ ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೆ ಅಥವಾ ಇನ್ನಾವುದೇ ಆಚರಣೆ ಇರಬಹುದು. ಬಹುಶಃ ಇವತ್ತಿನ ಪೀಳಿಗೆಗೆ ತುಳಸಿಗೆ ಸುತ್ತು ಅಂತ ಹೇಳಿದ್ರೆ ನಿಮಗೇನಾದ್ರು ಒಂದು ಸುತ್ತು ಕಡಿಮೆಯಾ ಅಂತ ಕೇಳಿದ್ರೂ ಕೇಳಿದರೇ! ಮನೆ ಮುಂದೆ ತುಳಸಿ ಹುಡುಕುವುದೂ ಅಷ್ಟೇ ಕಷ್ಟದ ವಿಶಯ, ಅದು ಬೇರೆ ಮಾತು.

ತುಳಸಿ ಗಿಡಕ್ಕೆ ಸುತ್ತು ಬರುವುದು ದೇವರಿಗಾಗಿ ನನಗೆ ಆ ರೀತಿಯ ನಂಬಿಕೆಗಳಿಲ್ಲ ಎನ್ನುವ ಜನರಿಗೆ, ಮುಂಜಾನೆದ್ದು ತುಳಸಿ ಸುತ್ತುವುದರಿಂದ ನಮ್ಮ ಉಸಿರಾಟಕ್ಕೂ (ತುಳಸಿ ಒಂದು ಜರ್ಮಿಸೈಡ್‌ ಸಸ್ಯ, ಅದರ ಸುವಾಸನೆಯೂ ಹಿತವಾದುದು) ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು ಎಂಬುದು ಹೊಳಿಯಲಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ. ನಾನು ನೋಡಿದಂತೆ, ಇಂದಿನ ಜನ ಅಮೆರಿಕ ಒನ್ಲೈನ್‌ನಂಥ ಹಸಿ ವ್ಯಾಪಾರಿ ಜೀವನಾಭ್ಯಾಸಕ್ಕೆ ಒಳಗಾಗಲು ಹಾತೊರೆಯುತ್ತಾರೆ ವಿನಹ, ನಮ್ಮ ಸನಾತನ ಧರ್ಮದ ಅಚರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಆಳವಾಗಿ ಚಿಂತಿಸುವಷ್ಟು ವ್ಯವಧಾನ ಇರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಏಕೆಂದರೆ ಹೇಳಿ ಕೇಳಿ ಇದು ರೆಡಿಮೇಡ್‌ ಯುಗ ಪ್ರತಿಯಾಂದೂ ನಮಗೆ ‘ಪ್ಯಾಕೇಜ್‌’ನಲ್ಲಿ ಬೇಕು. ಇರಲಿ, ಮಾತು ಬೇರೆ ದಿಕ್ಕಿನತ್ತ ಹೋಗುವುದು ಬೇಡ. ಪ್ರತಿಬಾರಿಯ ಲೇಖನಕ್ಕಿಂತ ಈ ಬಾರಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಡಿಫರೆಂಟ್‌ ಆಗಿ ಬರೆದಿದ್ದೀರ, ಬಹುಶಃ ಆಳವಾಗಿ ಆಲೋಚಿಸಿಯೇ ಬರೆದಿರಬಹುದು!

ಇವತ್ತಿನ ಲೇಖನ ‘ಜ್ಞಾನ’ ದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಓದಿದೆ. ಇವತ್ತಿನ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞ ಇದ್ದಿದ್ದರೆ, ಗೂಗಲ್‌ ನೋಡಿ ಅವನಿಗೆ ಏನು ಅನ್ನಿಸುತ್ತಿತ್ತೇನೊ! ಅಡುಗೆಯಿಂದ ಕಾಯಿಲೆಯ ಲಕ್ಷಣಗಳವರೆಗೂ ಗೂಗಲ್‌ (ಅಗಲವಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನ) ಇರುವದು ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು, ಆದರೆ ‘ಜಾಕ್‌ ಆಫ್‌ ಆಲ್‌, ಮಾಸ್ಟರ್‌ ಅಫ್‌ ನನ್‌’ ಅದು ನಿಜವೂ ಕೂಡ. ಬಹಳಷ್ಟು ಸಿನೆಮಾಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ವಿಮರ್ಶೆ ಓದಿ ಮೋಸ ಹೋಗಿದ್ದೂ ಉಂಟು!

ನಿಮ್ಮ ಲೇಖನಗಳು ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ‘ದೀರ್ಘವಾಗಿ’ ವಿಚಾರ ಮಾಡಲು ಪ್ರೇರಣೆ ಆದರೆ, ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ ನಕ್ಕು ಬಿಡುವ (ಮೈಂಡ್‌ ರಿಫ್ರೆಶಿಂಗ್‌), ಮತ್ತು ಕೆಲವೊಮ್ಮೆ, ‘ಇದು ನನ್ನ ಬಗ್ಗೆಯೇ’ ಎಂದು ಅನಿಸುವ ಹಾಗೆ ಇರುತ್ತವೆ. ಹೀಗೆಯೇ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತಿರಿ, ನಮಗೆ ಓದಿಸುತ್ತಿರಿ!

ವಿಚಿತ್ರಾನ್ನ ಓದಿ ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಜ್ಞಾನದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಗೊತ್ತಾಯ್ತು. ಎಲ್ಲ ಸಣ್ಣ ವಿಷಯಕ್ಕೂ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಹತ್ತಿರ ಕನಿಷ್ಠ 3-4 ಪಾರಾಗ್ರಾಫ್‌ಗಳಷ್ಟಾದರೂ ಸಾಮಗ್ರಿ ಇರುತ್ತೆ , ನಿಮ್ಮ ಬುದ್ಧಿವಂತಿಕೆ ಮೆಚ್ಚಬೇಕಾದ್ದೇ!

ಈ ವಾರದ ಅಂಕಣ ವಿಚಿತ್ರಾನ್ನ ಓದಿ ತುಂಬಾ ಖುಷಿಯಾಯಿತು. ಆಳವಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನ - ಅಗಲವಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನ ತುಂಬಾ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದಿದೆ. ಈ ಆಧುನಿಕ ಕಾಲದ ಕಟು ಸತ್ಯವನ್ನ ನೀವು ತುಂಬಾ ಸರಳವಾಗಿ, ರುಚಿಕರವಾಗಿ ತಿಳಿಹೇಳಿದ್ದಿರಿ.

ಪ್ರತಿ ಮಂಗಳವಾರ ನಿಮ್ಮ ಲೇಖನಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಶಬರಿಯಂತೆ ಕಾಯುತ್ತಾ ಇರುತ್ತೇನೆ. ನಿಮ್ಮ ಲೇಖನಗಳು ನನ್ನ ಕೆಲಸದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಫೂರ್ತಿಯನ್ನು, ಹೊಸ ಹೊಸ ಕೆಲಸಗಳನ್ನು ಕಲಿಯಲು ಆಸಕ್ತಿಯನ್ನು ಮೂಡಿಸುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಸರಳವಾಗಿ ನನ್ನಂತ ಅತಿ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯರು ಸಹ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಂಡು ಮನನ ಮಾಡಿಕೊಳ್ಳಲು ಸಹಾಯವಾಗುವಂತೆ ಬರೆಯುತ್ತೀರಿ. ನಿಮಗೆ ನನ್ನ ತುಂಬು ಹೃದಯದ ಕೃತಜ್ಞತೆಗಳು.

ಈ ವಾರದ ವಿಚಿತ್ರಾನ್ನವನ್ನು ಈಗ ತಾನೆ ಸಂಜೆಯ ಸ್ನಾಕ್ಸ್‌ ಆಗಿ ತಿಂದೆ . ಜೀರ್ಣವಾಗುವ ಮೊದಲು ಒಂದೆರಡು ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯಗಳನ್ನು ಬರೆಯೋಣ ಅನ್ನಿಸ್ತು. ನೀವು ಹೇಳಿದ ಹಾಗೆ ಈಗ ಆಳಕಿಂತ ಅಗಲಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಪ್ರಾಶಸ್ತ್ಯ ಸಿಗ್ತಾ ಇದೆ. jack of all, master of none is master of every one now a days. ಬಹುಶಃ ನಮಗೆ ಬಂದೆರಗುತ್ತಿರುವ informatoin floodಅನ್ನು ಸಮರ್ಥವಾಗಿ ನಿಭಾಯಿಸಲು ಅಶಕ್ತರಾಗುತ್ತಿದವೋ ಏನೋ. As per management science, a CEO of a company should have an in-depth knowledge of atleast one major area (like production, finance, marketing) and should have some knowledge of all the other areas and then only he can succeed in his position. But I am not sure as to how many will have the first attribute of in-depth knowledge in one area.

ನಮ್ಮ ಸಾಫ್ಟ್‌ವೇರ್‌ ಕ್ಷೇತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ Project Manager ಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಚಾಲ್ತಿಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಜೋಕ್‌ಗಳು ಈ lack of in-depth knowledge ಮೇಲೆ ಇವೆ.

ಈ ಬಾರಿಯ ವಿಚಿತ್ರಾನ್ನ ಲೇಖನ ನಾನು ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಚಿಂತಿಸುವ ವಿಚಾರ. ನಾವು ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿರುವ ಕೆಲಸದ ವಿಚಾರದಲ್ಲೂ ಅಷ್ಟೆ. ಒಂದೆ ಪ್ರೊಜೆಕ್ಟ್‌ ನಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದೆರಡು ವರುಷ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡಿಬಿಟ್ಟರೆ ನಮಗೆ ಬೇಜಾರು ಆಗಿ ಬಿಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಆದರೆ ನಮಗೆ ಆ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಆಳವಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನವಿದೆ ಅಂತೇನು ಅಲ್ಲಾ. ಆಳವಾದ ಜ್ನಾನಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಪ್ರವೃತ್ತಿಯೇ ಈಗ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿಲ್ಲವೆಂದರೆ ತಪ್ಪಾಗಲಿಕ್ಕಿಲ್ಲ. ನಮ್ಮ ಶಿಕ್ಷಣ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯೂ ಅಗಲವಾದ ಜ್ಞಾನಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಒತ್ತು ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆಯೆಂದು ನನ್ನ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆ.

ಆಳ ಜ್ಞಾನ - ಅಗಲ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಲೇಖನ ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿದೆ. ಅನೇಕ ಸಲ ಈ ವಿಚಾರ ನನ್ನ ಮನಸ್ಸಿನಲ್ಲೂ ಬಂದಿತ್ತು. ಈ ಅಗಲ ಜ್ಞಾನವೆಂದರೆ ಸುಮಾರಾಗಿ ಪತ್ರಿಕೆ -ದೂರದರ್ಶನ, ಸುತ್ತ -ಮುತ್ತಲಿನ ಆಗುಹೋಗುಗಳನ್ನು ನಿಯಮಿತವಾಗಿ ಗಮನಿಸುವುದರಿಂದ ಬರುವ ಸಾಮಾನ್ಯ ಜ್ಞಾನ ಇರಬಹುದೆಂದು ನನ್ನ ಅನಿಸಿಕೆ. ಇದು ಸರಿಯೇ?

ಸರ್ವಜ್ಞ ಈಗಿದ್ದಿದ್ದರೆ -ಯಾವುದೋ ಒಂದೇ ವಿಷಯದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಮಾತ್ರ ತಿಳಿದುಕೊಂಡಿರುವ ಆಳ ಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಿಂತ, ಎಲ್ಲ ವಿಷಯಗಳನ್ನು ಅಲ್ಪ-ಸ್ವಲ್ಪ ಅರಿತಿರುವ ಅಗಲ ಜ್ಞಾನಿಯೇ ಮೇಲು ಎಂಬ ಹೊಸದೊಂದು ವಚನವನ್ನು ಬರೆದಿರುತ್ತಿದ್ದ.

ಆಳ-ಅಗಲಗಳು ಚೆನ್ನಾಗಿ ಮೂಡಿಬಂದಿದೆ. ಅಗಲ ಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಾಗುತ್ತಾ ಸಾಕಷ್ಟು ಅವಾಂತರಗಳು ನಡೆಯುತ್ತಿವೆ. ಈ ಆಳಜ್ಞಾನವಿಲ್ಲದೆ ಅ(ಗಲ) ಜ್ಞಾನಿಗಳ ಅವಾಂತರದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕು ನೊಂದಿರುವ ಆತ್ಮ ‘ಭಗವಾನ್‌ ಗೌತಮ ಬುದ್ಧ’. ನವ ಬೌದ್ಧರು / ಅಂಬೇಡ್ಕರ್‌ ವಾದಿಗಳು ಬುದ್ಧನಬಗ್ಗೆ, ಬುದ್ಧತತ್ವದಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹರಡಿರುವ ಅಪವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಗಳು, ಬುದ್ಧವಿರೋಧೀ ವೈದಿಕರು ಹಾಗೂ ಚಾರ್ವಾಕಾಭಿಮಾನೀ ಬುದ್ಧಿಜೀವಿಗಳು ಬುದ್ಧತ್ವದ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಹೂಡಿರುವ ಖಂಡನೆಗಳು ಆಳವಾದ ಅಧ್ಯಯನದ ಅಭಾವ ಮಾಡಬಹುದಾದ ಅಧ್ವಾನಗಳಿಗೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯಾಗಿದೆ. ಈಚೆಗೆ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಗೋಖಲೆ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕ ವಿಚಾರ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ದಿನಾಂಕ 25-06-2005 ರವರೆಗೆ ಶತಾವಧಾನಿ ಆರ್‌. ಗಣೇಶ್‌ ಅವರು ನಡೆಸಿಕೊಟ್ಟ ಬುದ್ಧನ ಜೀವನ ಹಾಗೂ ತತ್ವಗಳ ಕುರಿತ ಪ್ರವಚನ ಸಪ್ತಾಹ ಆಳವಾದ ಅಧ್ಯಯನ ತಂದುಕೊಡುವ ಸಮನ್ವಯ ದೃಷ್ಟಿ ತನ್ಮೂಲಕ ಒದಗುವ ಚಿತ್ತಶಾಂತಿಗೆ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿಯಾಗಿದೆ.

ಒಂದಾನೊಂದು ತತ್ವ ಅದೆಷ್ಟೇ ಮಹತ್ವದ್ದಾಗಿರಲಿ, ಯಾರೇ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿರಲಿ ಸ್ವಾರ್ಥಿಜನರ ಕೈಯ್ಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಕ್ಕು, ಸಿಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಜೀವನ ವಿರೋಧಿಯಾಗಿ ಬಿಂಬಿಸಲ್ಪಡುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬುದಕ್ಕೆ ನಮ್ಮಲ್ಲಿ ಇಂದು ಕಂಡುಬರುತ್ತಿರುವ ಬೌದ್ಧಮತ ನಿದರ್ಶನವಾಗಿದೆ. ಮೇಲೆ ತಿಳಿಸಿದ ಪ್ರವಚನಮಾಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಪಷ್ಟವಾಗಿ ಗೋಚರಿಸಿದ ಸಂಗತಿಗಳು ಹೀಗಿವೆ:

1. ಬುದ್ಧಭಗವಂತನು ಅದಾಗಲೇ ಭರತವರ್ಷದಲ್ಲಿ ಪ್ರಚಲಿತವಿದ್ದ ಸನಾತನ ಧರ್ಮಕ್ಕಿಂತ ತೀರ ಹೊಸದೇನನ್ನೂ ಹೇಳಲಿಲ್ಲ.
2. ಬುದ್ಧ ಹೇಳದೆ ಬಿಟ್ಟ ಕೆಲವು ಪ್ರಮುಖ ವಿಚಾರಗಳ ಬಗ್ಗೆ ಶೃತಿಗಳೂ ಮೌನವಾಗಿವೆ.
3. ಬುದ್ಧ ಸಂಸ್ಕೃತ ಹಾಗೂ ಬ್ರಾಹ್ಮಣ ವಿರೋಧಿಯಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.
4. ಬುದ್ಧ ಪ್ರಣೀತ ಬೌದ್ಧ ಧರ್ಮ ವೈದಿಕ ವಿರೋಧಿಯಲ್ಲ.
5. ಬುದ್ಧ ವರ್ಣಾಶ್ರಮ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆಯ ಕಟ್ಟಾ ವಿರೋಧಿಯಾಗಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.
6. ಬುದ್ಧ ಐಹಿಕ ಜೀವನದ ಸುಖಸಂತೋಷಗಳಬಗ್ಗೆ ತಿರಸ್ಕಾರಹೊಂದಿರಲಿಲ್ಲ.
7. ಬುದ್ಧನ ವೈಚಾರಿಕತೆ, ವೇದಾಂತಮಾರ್ಗದ ಅಧ್ಯಾರೋಪ ಅಪವಾದ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆಗೆ ತೀರ, ತೀರ ಹತ್ತಿರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ.
8. ಬುದ್ಧ ಅಜ್ಞೇಯತಾವಾದಿಯೂ, ಶೂನ್ಯವಾದಿಯೂ ಅಲ್ಲ.
9. ಬುದ್ಧ ಸಮಾಜ ಸುಧಾರಕನೂ ಅಲ್ಲ ಕ್ರಾಂತಿಕಾರಿಯೂ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಪವಾಡಪುರುಷನಂತೂ ಅಲ್ಲವೇ ಅಲ್ಲ.

Would like to share a thing which my teacher used to say:

If you consider Knowledge on X axis and age/qualification on Y axis, our graph would be initially like this. we will have very little knowledge of many things….or rather we know nothing about everything. As we progress in our qualification, when we reach PUC, we will shift our focus on only certain area of interest…so the graph now becomes. now we know something abt something…but as we progress further…we choose our area of specialization in our area of interest, the graph will be so as we can see here, as the specialization increases, the area of knowledge decreases.

Now consider a situation where we have mastered our knowledge on one particular topic and get PhD in that topic, what would the graph would be. this means our qualification or knowledge of a particular thing tends to infinity but our area of knowledge tends to zero. in other words, we know everything about nothing….!

Your article was good, I remember in one of the interviews I conducted around 2000 or so, when I asked a candidate about a programing question (or SQL I forget), he answered that it is no big deal, all he need is a manual and he also pooh-poohed the question saying wholl remember the syntax these days. I had hard time trying to make him understand that I was not asking for a perfect syntax but trying to evaluate how he thinks. In a way it has become quite true these days in s/w world, all the knowledge is available in the internet, all you need to know is the keywords to search for. Your latest article made me write this email. First and foremost, I noticed something surprising - the topic itself. Usually, the light-hearted sarvajna who touches on various topics in an unusual way, is doing somewhat retrospection (that is applicable to anyone else) that too in a serious way with very subtle lightness to the topic. Does this mean you have time now to be little philosophical? Does this indicate a change, setting tone to forthcoming dishes in v-chitranna? No matter what, I enjoyed reading it, because, there were several things in it that seemed as if you wrote my thoughts.

Believe it or not, your thoughts on identifying Shivaranjini as the raga of a song coincide with mine. It is the only one raaga, I get to guess right most of the times. Its my favorite one too. I just love the way Kishore, SPB make the heart fill with joy with their splendid renditions. Avaru hadalli tharasthayi-ge bandaga aaguva aa anubhthi adeshtu baari savidaru saaladu. Though Im deviating here a bit, I just want to mention this, which you might know.

In one of the Anmol Geet series cassettes of Kishore Kumar, a music director (Im not sure who it was, it was long time back I heard that, during my college days) talks before every song about something relevant to Kishore or the song. I remember hearing something along the lines as follows for the song Mere naina sawan bhado . It seems that though the song was originally meant to be sung by only Kishore, due to the classical nature of the song, even after many rehearsals, Kishore did not feel comfortable or could not give his best to song and he requested R.D.Burman to have Lata sing the song. After the song recording was done for Latas voice, Kishore picked up that record and went home and came back to studios few days later and he gave one of the most memorable songs. (In fact, I think, his version has been more popular than Latas)

Coming to the depth or/and breadth of knowledge, I have thought about it so many times wondering the same way (as anyone else would). As you have mentioned, though Im quite happy with what I have accomplished, personally I lack satisfaction that would come from knowing or acquiring a skill only after reaching certain depth in it. I think, in addition to the several reasons you have mentioned, it is uncommon to see parents or people in general encouraging a genuine interest or liking in kids, especially if it does not fall within studies. Even if it is studies, kids are rarely given the opportunity, encouragement to explore beyond the imposed limits. The conditioning is so powerful that the limits imposed for learning makes kids feel as if it is never attainable. Im not sure whether Im saying it right. I hope you got the gist of it. When we read about people such as Newton, Galileo, etc, we get to know that they were exceptional people who could ponder on a thought for years. Its that ability to think through till you find a meaningful answer or to continue the quest to figure it out is not what is being nurtured. Instead, the message conveyed to kids is that there is time for everything (Aatakkondu kaala, paatakkondu kaala). Learning is done in terms of timetable or periods when one attends school. Just when a concept or thought is being formed in a childs mind, another session starts and child is distracted and the thought dies. I think that habit has grown with us and we are used to it now. We are always ready to be distracted or looking out for distractions. Perseverance has become a rare skill. Just like the effects of globalization, over a period of time, we may all look alike with very minimum things differentiating us other than the genes.

It makes me wonder will we ever achieve the level to asses our own experiences like Dasaru (Purundara, Kanaka etc), DVG or others likewise. Thinking about the depth and breadth, who according to you are gifted with both (depth and breadth) or known for both? I can think of only two personalities: Leonardo da vinci and our own Shivarama Karanth.

Excellent article. you are very right. For some reason even i was thinking about the vertical knowledge recently. Looks like you also know telepathy. My guess is (from my limited experience), this horizontal knowledge may be true only in technical field. I really hope especially in medical or other critical fields, people do posses vertical knowledge.

Hope you are fine and doing well. The topic of this weeks Vichithranna was interesting. I very much appreciate the hobby of your friend which is very unique. The pic of such a beautiful rose in the early good-morning can surely keep the whole day good (Even in the worst case scenario such as a call from ones mother-in-law!). More than the rose, what i liked the most was the pic of the leaves where reflecting water droplets were present!. That was amazing!, For a moment I was lost in the memory of "her first blush" on her cheeks that was glorified by the reflectance of near infrared rays during a sun set.

With reference to the "wide knowledge" and "deep knowledge" , the words "wide" and "deep" are subjective to some extent. Nevertheless, a deep quest for understanding/knowing and a deep thirst for questioning whatever we see in life - are two significant qualities that make one to increase his/her horizons of knowledge in life.

Either for a web portal or for a journal, writing column regularly is difficult, Your way of picking up various new subjects every week is amazing!. According to me, not only you succeed in writing, also good at managing controversies as I observed in several cases during these years.

Indeed Food for thought. This reminds me of the well known quote, "Jack of all, master of none". Why can’t Jack of all become a master of all too? It all depends on individuals interest to master the subject. Though it is quite possible to be a master of all, its not necessary. As you have mentioned, its better to be horizontally qualified than be in depth with knowledge. In this extremely competitive world, one has to know everything in order to survive - atleast little of everything.

I liked the idioms used in kannada - some original some translated from English. Both are equally good.
