The committee deliberated for over seven hours to identify areas in AKKA constitution that need to be amended to include all Kannda Kootas at policymaking level. The various models with its advantages and disadvantages were discussed. Four drafts were available for review.
Finally an amendment to include all the Kannda Kootas (about 30) to the board of Directors was adopted. The committee also voted to increase the directors elected from the dues paying general membership of AKKA (up to 21). Thus one can enter the board of AKKA from the Kannda Kootas or through the dues paying membership body of AKKA. The expansive board of up to 51 members will elect the executive body of AKKA.
A second model, which was not adopted by the Byelaw committee, but however was allowed, to be presented to the board and general body of AKKA is based on the presidential model. The dues paying general membership of AKKA will elect the executive body directly. The board will consist of all Kannada Kootas (about 30). There will be a form of primary approval of the executive committee candidates by the board before their election by the general membership.
The committee will complete the amendment drafts within a month. The amended constitution will then be presented to the board of Directors and the general membership of AKKA for ratification, following which the elections will be held for various AKKA positions.
Kannadigas are welcome to give their input to these models and contact their directors of AKKA if they have any comments, suggestions or modifications. If anyone needs more details please write to [email protected]
