Hello India,

Why you must file income tax returns?

In simple words, Income Tax return is a payment to the government by an individual from his earnings. Income Tax return should be regularly filed with the government authorities either in physical form or in electronic form.

Generally people have a mistaken belief that tax is just a source of income for the government and they take it just in order to increase their revenues. But this conception is wrong; Tax is a social obligation of an individual. One should all by himself pay his taxes to the government in order to ensure that government can perform all its obligations in time and in the right way.

Individuals whose income is below a specified mark need not pay any tax and such individuals are exempted. Persons have been broadly classified under three categories namely:

* Individuals have their income taxable, if it exceeds Rs.160,000 p.a.

* Women have their income taxable, if it exceeds Rs.190,000 p.a.

* Senior Citizens have their income taxable, if it exceeds Rs.240,000 p.a.

People coming under the purview of the above are required to pay taxes.

Taxes are in the nature on “no quid pro quo". “Quid pro quo" is a Latin phase which means something for something. So, here it means that an individual cannot demand the actual amount of services that he has paid for as taxes. For example- If an individual pays Rs. 1000 as tax to the government then, he cannot go the government offices and demand for benefits worth Rs. 1000 from the government. The taxes collected by the government are used for general welfare of the people and not for individuals.

The benefit of paying taxes cannot be immediate also. Once an individual has paid his taxes, he cannot claim its benefit immediately. It will depend upon the government and the various factors that government will take into consideration before taking any action. An example will make it simple- Suppose an individual has paid his tax and now he immediately rushes to the government office demanding that he has by his obligation aid his taxes on time yet the roads near his house is in pathetic condition and he wants them to be repaired within a week. In such a case, he will not succeed as government will first take into account various factors such availability of a road constructor, materials, etc., before it commences for improving the conditions of the roads and it may take time before the work of improvement actually starts.

On the other hand, as per Section 139(4), tax returns can be filed latest by end of one year from the relevant assessment year. If not filed then consequences would be as follows:

* Penalty of Rs.5000 may be imposed u/s 271F.
* Liable to pay interest u/s 234B.
* He cannot carry forward the loss.
* Deductions u/s 10A, 10B, 80IA, 80IAB and 80IC is not available.

Taxes tend to create a legal and moral duty in minds of people. People should willingly come forward and contribute to this cause and pay the fair amount of taxes as it acts as a source of fund for the Government, who in return use these funds in financing projects for developing the infrastructure of the country by way of building flyovers, bridges and other development projects.

These funds are also used in building up of orphan ages, business and management schools and other research and technological hubs. In short, we can say that paying of taxes leads to thedevelopment of our own economy. We just contribute to the development of our country and one must feel proud in doing so. So, taxes should be paid and paid regularly and fairly, after all, it"s our country and its development is in our hands.
